(HBO DOCUMENTARY) – The nominees for the best documentary short category at the 87th Annual Academy Awards are “Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1,” “Joanna,” “Our Curse,” “The Reaper,” and “White Earth.”
“Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1,” directed by Ellen Goosenberg Kent, spotlights the traumas endured by America’s veterans, as seen through the work of a crisis hotline’s trained responders, who provide immediate intervention and support in hopes of saving the lives of service members.
“Joanna,” directed by Polish filmmaker Aneta Kopacz, tells the story of a mother diagnosed with an untreatable illness, and the tenderness, love and thoughtfulness that comes when facing death.

“The Reaper,” directed by Gabriel Serra Arguello, documents the life of a man named Efrain, known as the Reaper, who has worked at a slaughterhouse for 25 years, allowing the audience to discover his deep relationship with death and his struggle to live.
And “White Earth,” directed by J. Christian Jensen, tracks four people, including three children and an immigrant mother, who have moved to the desolate Northern Plains seeking work in the oil fields, in search of the American Dream.
