A look at scenes from the five films nominated for best animated feature at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.

(WALT DISNEY PICTURES) – The five films nominated for the Academy Award in the animated feature category are: “Big Hero 6,” “The Boxtrolls,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” “Song of the Sea,” and “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.”

“Big Hero 6,” tells the story of a special bond that develops between a plus-sized inflatable robot and a child prodigy, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes. The film is directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, and stars Scott Adsit and Ryan Potter.

“The Boxtrolls” depicts a young orphaned boy raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors who tries to save his friends from an evil exterminator. It is based on the children’s novel ‘Here Be Monsters’ by Alan Snow. The film is directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, and stars Ben Kingsley and Jared Harris.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2,” the blockbuster sequel to the 2010 feature, picks the story up with Hiccup and Toothless discovering an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, finding themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. The film is directed by Dean DeBlois and stars Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel, and Cate Blanchett.

In “Song of the Sea,” produced in Ireland, Saoirse is a child who is the last of the selkies, women in Irish and Scottish legends who transform from seals into people. She escapes from her grandmother’s home to journey to the sea and free fairy creatures trapped in the modern world. The film is directed by Tomm Moore.

And “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” a whimsical Japanese animated film from director Isao Takahata, a tiny girl found inside a shining stalk of bamboo grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady.
