“CHIPS” gets big screen R-rated upgrade

Big screen adaptation of 70s California highway police adventure “CHIPS” gets an R-rated review.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (MARCH 20, 2017) (REUTERS) – The remake of popular TV series “CHIPS” arrived in Hollywood on Monday (March 20) led by real members of the California Highway Patrol as well as original “CHIPS” actor Erik Estrada and cast and crew from the big screen adaptation, including Michael Pena, Kristen Bell and actor and director Dax Shepard.

“You know, we’re 40 years away from when the show was on, it was a family friendly show and this is an R rated action comedy, so, I think we had a lot of liberty to do something new,” said the film’s actor and director Dax Shepard about the classic 1970s TV series that debuted on NBC September 15, 1977 and aired six seasons.

Dax Shepard and Michael Pena star as officers Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello in the new big screen “CHIPS.”

“I actually want to do movies and keep doing movies with people that I like and that are a good time, this one was a vacation,” added actor Michael Pena, who plays the role of “Ponch.”

For her role as Karen, actress Kristen Bell said she needed to transform for her role.

“I thought it would be easy, but my husband gave me a lot of ‘no’, so, I just had to tap into some inner disgust for him of which there is very little, but I kind of combined the 25 times he has annoyed me over the last 10 years and then put that in a little volcano and that was Karen,” said Bell, who is married to director Dax Shepard.

“CHIPS” the movie is based on the original TV series CHIPs and follows the story of two California highway patrol officers. Both have recently joined the California Patrol for different reasons. Poncherello is a cocky undercover federal agent and Baker is a pro beaten up pro biker trying to put his life back together. The inexperienced rookie and the tough cop might make their partnership work.

CHIPS is set to release widely on Friday, March 24, 2017.
