Record-breaking debut weekend for “Furious 7” at the North American box office.

(UNIVERSAL PICTURES) – The latest film in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “Furious 7,” raced to a record-breaking weekend at the North American box office with a $143.6 million haul from Friday (April 03) through Sunday (April 05).

That set three box office records: biggest debut for the franchise; for the month of April, and any movie so far in 2015. The first six movies earned $2.4 billion combined.

The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Paul Walker in his final film – the actor died in a car crash in 2013 before filming had finished.

The cast of the family friendly PG-13 franchise stoked interest on social media, posting photos from the set and taking fan feedback, said Phil Contrino, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com. The movie’s Facebook page has 54 million likes, higher than any other active film franchise.

Holding over from previous weeks, animated film “Home” saw as much as $27.4 million, pushing its global total of $107 million.

Comedy “Get Hard” has earned another $12.9 million added to its $57 million earnings.

Walt Disney Co.’s retelling of the “Cinderella” story collected $10.3 million domestically bringing it total to $167.3 million with the global revenue closing in on $400 million.

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent” added another $10 million to its international take of $183 million.
