Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, Denis Villeneuve, Mel Gibson will compete for this year’s best director Oscar.
(AMPAS UNRESTRICTED POOL) – The nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday (January 24) and “La La Land” garnered 14 nods, including one for best director for Damien Chazelle. Chazelle is already on an awards streak, having won the Golden Globe for best director on January 08.
Competing with him in the category will be Barry Jenkins for his coming-of-age film “Moonlight;” Kenneth Lonergan for his study of grief “Manchester by the Sea;” Denis Villeneuve for his alien sci-fi movie “Arrival;” and Mel Gibson for his war movie “Hacksaw Ridge.”
Noticeably absent from the list was Martin Scorsese, who was considered in the running for his religious passion project “Silence.”
The Oscars will be handed out in Los Angeles on February 26.
