“The Revenant,” “The Big Short” and “Staight Outta Compton” among PGA nominees

Producers Guild name their nominees for annual awards show, seen as harbinger for Oscar best picture lineup.

(PARAMOUNT PICTURES) – “The Revenant,” “Ex Machina” and “Straight Outta Compton” were among the nominees announced Tuesday (January 5) for the Producers Guild of America annual PGA awards.

The Producers Guild top honor is often considered an indicator of the film that will take home the Academy Award for best picture.

“The Revenant” director Alejandro G. Inarritu took home the PGA top award in 2015 for “Birdman.” The film about a washed-up actor attempting to re-establish himself in the acting world went on to win the several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

Notably left out of the nominations are several award contenders, such as lesbian romance drama “Carol,” psychological thriller “Room” and “Star Wars: The The Force Awakens.”

While “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has failed to garner any major award nominations it was named one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute. The film has also become the fourth highest grossing film at the world-wide box office, hauling in in $1.54 billion worldwide.

Other contenders nominated in the category of Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Picture are Wall Street misdeeds comedy “The Big Short,” Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn,” and Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight.”

Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar dominate the category of Outstanding Producer for Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures with two nominations, one for comedy-drama film “Inside Out” and another for “The Good Dinosaur.”

“Minions,” “The Peanuts Movie” and “Anomalisa” round out the animated film nominations.

The Producers Guild will announce the winners of the PGA during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 23.
