{"id":1028,"date":"2022-10-17T13:12:06","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T13:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpelembe.net\/?p=1028"},"modified":"2022-10-17T13:12:06","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T13:12:06","slug":"will-south-africas-street-vendors-go-bust-in-a-cashless-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpelembe.net\/index.php\/will-south-africas-street-vendors-go-bust-in-a-cashless-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Will South Africa&#8217;s street vendors go bust in a cashless world?"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>Kim Harrisberg\r\n\r\nPublished: October 12, 2022\r\n\r\n<\/pre>\n<div class=\"ArticleText_text__JOj12\">\n<ul>\n<li>Digital payments on the rise in South Africa<\/li>\n<li>People without mobile phones, bank accounts excluded<\/li>\n<li>Calls for innovation to include informal economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>JOHANNESBURG &#8211; For more than a decade, musician Thomas Nhassavele has been busking next to the parking payment machine at Johannesburg&#8217;s Rosebank Mall, where drivers often dropped their change into his guitar case.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But Nhassavele&#8217;s takings have dwindled in the past year or two as growing numbers of mall visitors use cards to pay at the machine&#8217;s new cashless payment system &#8211; some mumbling a quick apology to him before they head for the exits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There has been about a 50% reduction in donations since the mall installed cashless ticket payments. Many people just don&#8217;t want to carry money anymore,&#8221; he said, strumming his guitar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ArticleText_text__JOj12\">\n<p>Cashless payments in the country are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yoco.com\/za\/blog\/go-cashless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the rise<\/a>\u00a0as customers are drawn to the convenience, safety and hygiene of tapping a card or scanning a QR code in post-COVID, crime-ridden South Africa &#8211; sometimes at the expense of the informal economy.<\/p>\n<p>While analysts say the cashless move has boosted sales for small businesses, those dependent on loose change &#8211; buskers, street traders or fuel station attendants who rely on tips &#8211; say the shift has hit their earnings.<\/p>\n<p>From Ghana to Kenya, the 59 billion cashless transactions carried out in Africa in 2020 are expected to nearly triple by 2030 to reach 172 billion, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/financial-services\/fs-2025\/pwc-future-of-payments.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must accept that technology will change things, but I fear this cashless world will kill our income,&#8221; Nhassavele told Context as a customer dropped a one rand ($0.06) coin into his guitar case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row g-0 ArticleSingleImage_wrapper__Yg5hM\">\n<div class=\"col-24\">\n<div class=\"imageContainer ImageContainer_imageContainer__4EO3z undefined\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"nextImage ImageContainer_nextImage__M4NfR\" src=\"https:\/\/ddc514qh7t05d.cloudfront.net\/dA\/55b4964a2b7321694c20d1c2baf84ccf\/1200w\/80q\" sizes=\"\n            (max-width: 640px) 100vw,\n            (max-width: 900px) 100vw,\n            (max-width: 1200px) 100vw,\n            60vw\n            \" srcset=\"https:\/\/ddc514qh7t05d.cloudfront.net\/dA\/55b4964a2b7321694c20d1c2baf84ccf\/384w\/80q 384w, https:\/\/ddc514qh7t05d.cloudfront.net\/dA\/55b4964a2b7321694c20d1c2baf84ccf\/640w\/80q 640w, https:\/\/ddc514qh7t05d.cloudfront.net\/dA\/55b4964a2b7321694c20d1c2baf84ccf\/900w\/80q 900w, https:\/\/ddc514qh7t05d.cloudfront.net\/dA\/55b4964a2b7321694c20d1c2baf84ccf\/1200w\/80q 1200w\" alt=\"A woman pays for her parking at a pay point in Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg, South Africa, October 7, 2022. Thomson Reuters Foundation\/Kim Harrisberg<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ArticleText_text__JOj12\">\n<h2>Barriers to banking<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/972866\/south-africa-mobile-internet-penetration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smartphone penetration<\/a>\u00a0in South Africa has grown from 48% to 78% in the past four years, while the number of South Africans over the age of 15 with bank accounts rose from 54% in 2011 to 84% in 2021, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/publication\/globalfindex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This lays a strong foundation for cashless payments, said Michael Thomson, creative director at SnapScan, a contactless QR code payment system that caters to 70,000 merchants across the country, and has 3 million downloads.<\/p>\n<p>But there are still barriers to increasing uptake.<\/p>\n<p>While women in South Africa are more likely to have bank accounts than their peers in other countries in the region, a lack of financial literacy and discrimination keeps them from accessing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfw4a.org\/publication\/gender-and-financial-inclusion-analysis-financial-inclusion-women-sadc-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full potential<\/a>\u00a0of banking resources and opportunities, the University of Johannesburg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/south-africa-needs-to-up-its-game-when-it-comes-to-financial-inclusion-for-women-168121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Navigating cashless systems typically requires a bank account, a cellphone number,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.context.news\/digital-divides\/south-african-tech-innovators-tackle-digital-divide-in-townships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internet access<\/a>\u00a0and digital literacy &#8211; not all of them available to those without identification documents or smartphones, including refugees and the homeless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The formal payment system and its innovations tend to be utilised by the higher-income markets rather than the lower-income or under-developed sectors of the economy,&#8221; said Chantal Maritz, head of PwC&#8217;s strategy and payments team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldeconomics.com\/National-Statistics\/Informal-Economy\/South%20Africa.aspx#:~:text=An%20informal%20economy%20(informal%20sector,billion%20at%20GDP%20PPP%20levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nearly 30%<\/a>\u00a0of South Africa&#8217;s economy is informal, according to the World Economics data site.<\/p>\n<p>Of the South Africans with bank accounts, 25% &#8211; or 8.3 million people &#8211; are underbanked, meaning they cannot access full banking services, said Maritz.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although digital payments don&#8217;t require a bank account, such street vendors, buskers and beggars would require a digital store of value that holds their digital money to make and accept payments,&#8221; she said. That could include a bank-linked e-wallet.<\/p>\n<h2>Cash is king?<\/h2>\n<p>Another group of workers feeling the cashless pinch in South Africa are fuel station attendants who fill up customers&#8217; cars with fuel, clean the windscreen and then &#8211; if the customer wants to pay on a card &#8211; bring the payment terminal to the driver.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Drivers want to tap and go.
