Musk, the wealthiest person in the world, is autistic. Musk, <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/people\/elon-musk-13829\/\">a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/person-of-the-year-2021-elon-musk-choice\/\">Time\u2019s 2021 Person of the Year<\/a>, is autistic. One of the most famous people on Earth is autistic. Perhaps it is worth letting that sink in?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As autism researchers, we think it is important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/experimental-results\/article\/greater-autism-knowledge-and-contact-with-autistic-people-are-independently-associated-with-favourable-attitudes-towards-autistic-people\/C637DA76663363D3B4C5435017A73782\">raise awareness of and improve attitudes towards autism<\/a>. There is now a growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurodnetwork.com\/\">appreciation of \u201cneurodiversity\u201d<\/a> in society, especially in the science and technology sector. There has also been discussion of how people, such as environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/sep\/02\/greta-thunberg-responds-to-aspergers-critics-its-a-superpower\">great activists due to their autistic traits<\/a> (although there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0272494421001018?via%3Dihub\">no statistical link between autism and environmentalism<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It is surprising, then, that there has been so little discussion of Musk\u2019s autism. Not only would this be useful for understanding Musk, who is now an influential but increasingly criticised figure, but it might also go a long way to highlighting autism-related strengths and difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to remember that he is neither representative of the autistic population nor the general one. But, if we believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/parenting-neuroscience-perspective\/202109\/why-lived-experience-matters\">individual experiences matter<\/a>, Musk\u2019s story is a chance to learn about him, autism and neurodiversity. Given his defining position in society, it is worth trying to understand Musk rather than leaving public discourse to sour further.<\/p>\n<figure>\n            <iframe width=\"440\" height=\"260\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cdZZpaB2kDM?wmode=transparent&amp;start=2557\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Bullying<\/h2>\n<p>Musk has shared stories of his social struggles as a child. He reports being bullied and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-interview-axel-springer-tesla-accelerate-advent-of-sustainable-energy?r=US&amp;IR=T\">\u201calmost beaten to death\u201d for being different<\/a>. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m001d1n9\">documentary<\/a>, Musk\u2019s mother talks about him as a \u201cyoung genius\u201d, but also a shy and awkward child without friends. Together, Musk has what psychologists call a \u201cdevelopmental history\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectrumnews.org\/features\/deep-dive\/how-abuse-mars-the-lives-of-autistic-people\/\">autistic characteristics and adverse experiences of not being accepted in childhood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Abuse directed at Musk for being autistic has continued into adulthood, with a Twitter executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/elon-musk-aspergers-autism-ableism-b2095652.html\">referring to him<\/a> as \u201cliterally special needs\u201d and \u201ca looney tune\u201d. Only a few people called this out. This is sadly reflective of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2018.00203\/full\">bullying that autistic people face<\/a> in the workplace and more generally. <\/p>\n<p>Such hostility is thought to partly explain why autistic people face the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autistica.org.uk\/news\/autistic-people-highest-unemployment-rates#:%7E:text=Just%2021.7%25%20of%20autistic%20people,can%20bring%20to%20the%20workplace.\">highest rates of unemployment of all disabled groups<\/a>. Musk is in a much more powerful position to defend himself than most others. But it is possible that the bullying he\u2019s experienced throughout his life speaks to why he can be defensive and combative on Twitter. <\/p>\n<p>It is also worth remembering that, although Musk appears emotionally robust, there is often more going on beneath the surface for autistic and neurodivergent people. Our research shows that autistic people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(19)30224-X\/fulltext\">use psychologically exhausting coping strategies<\/a>, such as \u201cmasking\u201d or hiding their authentic self, which can worsen mental health. This is why autism is considered an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-england-london-61988249\">invisible disability<\/a>\u201d. <\/p>\n<h2>Literal thinking<\/h2>\n<p>Autism is also sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10926488.2012.638814\">linked to a literal way of thinking<\/a>. This was epitomised by Musk physically carrying a bathroom sink into Twitter HQ, which he has recently taken ownership of, as a play on the common phrase \u201clet that sink in\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>It was, of course, a publicity stunt, but he might also have been making a comical point from the fact that many idioms don\u2019t literally make sense. The non-literal use of words like this doesn\u2019t necessarily come naturally to autistic people.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>While some people understand and appreciate this unconventional style of humour, many are likely to think it is strange or inappropriate. This has probably contributed to the polarised opinions about Musk, which might partly reflect <a href=\"https:\/\/bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1348\/000712602162553\">differences in humour<\/a> between autistic and non-autistic people, as revealed by research.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing on the US hit show Saturday Night Live, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fCF8I_X1qKI\">himself commented<\/a> on how his autistic communication style can be unusual and humorous: \u201cI don\u2019t always have a lot of intonation or variation in how I speak \u2026 which I\u2019m told makes for great comedy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>An unusual way of speaking has indeed been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-02487-6\">linked to autism in research<\/a>. For example, autistic people may have different acoustic features of their speech, such as pitch, which can make them appear blunt or rude. That is how Musk might be coming across in public situations, following his acquisition of social media giant Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s achievements are also likely to reflect autistic strengths in science and tech that are worth celebrating. In an interview last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cdZZpaB2kDM?t=2739\">he talked about<\/a> how he \u201cfound it rewarding to spend all night programming computers \u2026 just by myself\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>This dedication to specific interests, instead of socially conventional activities such as playing with friends as children, might explain why some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jenniferpalumbo\/2022\/06\/29\/how-autistic-individuals-can-offer-special-skills-to-your-business\/\">autistic people have extraordinary talents<\/a> and can sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/people-with-autism-make-more-logical-decisions-66946\">outperform non-autistic people on certain tasks<\/a>. Research on this is sparse but growing. <\/p>\n<p>One of the world\u2019s most famous people being autistic will invariably raise awareness of autism. This is what researchers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/\">charities<\/a> and the autism community have been trying to do for decades. If remembering that Musk is autistic can advance this endeavour, it may be worthwhile.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
