A giant pumpkin weighing almost a ton is the cream of the crop at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California.
HALF MOON BAY, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (OCTOBER 12, 2015) (NBC) – Oregon farmer Steve Daletas and his wife are the proud parents to this year’s prize-winning pumpkin at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Weigh-Off, south of San Francisco on Monday (October 12).
Daletas won around $11,000 for the massive gourd that tipped the scales at 1969 lbs, coming in just shy of a ton.
The winner had some stiff competition from other generously-sized pumpkins.
However the candidates this year were hundreds of pounds lighter than those in earlier years, a fact farmers attributed to California’s ongoing drought, local media reported.
The prolonged dry spell in California has been tough on pumpkin farmers as the giant gourds need a substantial amount of water to grow to a large size.
