Manchester United considering Mourinho as next boss, reports

Reports suggest Manchester United have held talks with representatives of Jose Mourinho about replacing Louis Van Gaal

LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (FEBRUARY 2, 2016) (REUTERS) – Manchester United have opened talks about Jose Mourinho becoming their next manager, according to media reports.

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea late last year.

But he has been repeatedly linked with the hotseat at United, currently occupied by Louis Van Gaal.

The Dutchman has been under pressure in recent months after a string of poor results and uninspiring performances.

He appeared to have brought himself some more time with back to back wins in the FA Cup and Premier League in the space of five days. His team beat Stoke 3-0 to keep alive their Champions League qualification hopes on Tuesday.

It followed a 3-1 win over Derby in the fourth round of the FA Cup last Friday.

However, with United’s rivals Manchester City announcing the appointment of Pep Guardiola this week, the club’s hierachy are under pressure to counter the move.

Mourinho could replace Van Gaal in the summer, which would rekindle his rivalry with Guardiola. The pair clashed repeatedly when they were in charge of Real Madrid (Mourinho) and Barcelona (Guardiola) in Spain.

However United could chose an alternative if they fire Van Gaal, or stick with him as his contract does not expire until the summer of 2017.
