Action from a packed day in Rio

China are victorious in the men’s synchronized diving, Thailand continue domination of women’s weightlifting and Josip Glasnovic won Croatia’s first gold of the Olympics in the trap-shooting.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (AUGUST 8, 2016) (IOC) – China’s Lin Yue and Chen Aisen won gold in men’s 10 metre synchronized diving at the Rio Games on Monday (August 8), keeping alive the country’s goal of a clean sweep in all eight events.

The world champion Chinese duo were the favourites to win, but it was the first time they have dived together at an Olympics.

Steele Johnson and David Boudia of the United States took the silver medal. Britain’s Thomas Daley and Daniel Goodfellow won bronze, edging out a German duo on their last dive.

Across six dives, China scored highest in every dive but one.

With Monday’s performance, Lin became the first diver to win repeat Olympic gold medals in the event.

The duo won by a wide margin, earning a final score of 496.98. The U.S. team ended with 457.11 points.

It was China’s fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event. Chinese divers are targeting a sweep of all eight gold medals at the Rio diving competition, after winning six of out the total at the London 2012 Olympics.

Thailand’s women weightlifters have made it two golds and one silver from three attempts and will aim for another medal on Tuesday (August 9) when their fourth and final female team member competes in the 63kg competition.

After Sopita Tanasan’s victory in the 48kg on Saturday, the opening contest of the Rio Games, Thailand followed up with a one-two in the 58kg contest on Monday. Sukanya Srisurat won from Pimsiri Sirikaew, with Kuo Hsing-Chun of Taiwan taking the bronze.

Both medallists attributed Thailand’s success to Boossaba Yodbangtoey, the president of the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) whose husband, Intarat, is vice-president of Thailand’s Olympic committee and of the International Weightlifting Federation.

Thailand has won five gold medals in weightlifting, all by women. They have five men in Rio but none is expected to challenge for gold.

Josip Glasnovic won Croatia’s first gold of the Olympics in the trap-shooting, beating Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo in a four-shot shootoff.

Glasnovic, a 33-year-old who also competed in Beijing in 2008, hit a perfect 15 of 15 in the semi-final but missed two in the final. He then fired four of four in the shootoff.

Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo, 46, earned his third silver medal in his seventh Olympic appearance.

Edward Ling, a 33-year-old Briton, took the bronze medal from David Kostelecky of the Czech Republic, in a 13-9 round.

In the beach volleyball, proving to be one of the most popular events at Rio 2016, hosts Brazil defeated rivals Argentina in their group stage match.

Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas de Freitas won comfortably 21-11 21-17 to move top of Pool B in the women’s event.
