White House weighs in on Trump’s flag-burning tweet
White House Spokesman Josh Earnest takes issue with a tweet from President-elect Donald Trump that said burning the U.S. flag should be punishable as a crime.
WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES (NOVEMBER 29, 2016) (WHITEHOUSE.GOV) – White House Spokesman Josh Earnest weighed in on Tuesday (November 29) on a tweet made earlier in the day by President-elect Donald Trump which read that the burning of the American flag should be punishable as a crime.
“Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.
Earnest said that while he and many other Americans might find the burning of the flag “offensive”, the country also had a “responsibility” to “carefully protect” constitutional rights like freedom of speech.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag burning is protected speech under the Constitution’s First Amendment.
