With the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election just days away, results from a sweeping multinational survey suggest that young Africans are acutely aware of and appreciate the influence the United States asserts on the continent, with 74% of the 4,200 (aged 18-24) polled from across 14 sub-Saharan African nations citing that the United States regularly impacts modern-day African affairs and 83% suggesting that influence is positive. AutoStore sues Ocado for infringing technology patents central to the Ocado Smart Platform

AutoStore, the pioneer and global leader in automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), today filed patent infringement lawsuits in the United States and the United Kingdom against the UK FTSE 100-listed online grocery retailer and technology company, Ocado Group Plc.

AutoStore is seeking court orders barring Ocado and its partner, Tharsus Group (of Blyth, UK), from manufacturing, importing, using and selling technology that infringes AutoStore’s patents, as well as monetary damages. Ocado has signed agreements with retailers such as Kroger (US), Marks & Spencer (UK), and Morrisons (UK) that rely on the continued infringement of AutoStore’s intellectual property. Read more

Dive into October National Seafood Month with the Marine Stewardship Council’s New Educational Guide to Sustainable Seafood

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a nonprofit whose sole mission is to end overfishing, today released a new resource designed to help Americans choose seafood that is “Good for you and the ocean too.” The MSC Blue Fish Guide, a digital guidebook available on the MSC-US website, is a helpful resource for Americans who want to add more seafood to their diets without costing the planet. The Guide’s release is timely with Seafood Month but also because according to a 2020 global study conducted by an independent research and strategy consultancy, GlobeScan, and commissioned by MSC, 55% of U.S. seafood consumers believe that we must consume seafood only from sustainable sources to protect the ocean. Furthermore, 64% of Americans want retailers’ and brands’ claims about sustainability and the environment to be clearly labeled by an independent organization, such as the MSC. Read more

CIEE Bolsters Revenue of American Universities by Supporting Their International Students Unable to Travel to the U.S. This Fall

As U.S. colleges and universities face unprecedented enrollment and financial challenges due to COVID-19, The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is using its global network of study abroad locations in 20 countries to help schools retain international students unable to travel to the United States this academic year. The new Linux Foundation Public Health (LFPH) initiative is launching with seven Premier members – Cisco, doc.ai, Geometer, IBM, NearForm, Tencent, and VMware – and two hosted exposure notifications projects, COVID ShieldTM and COVID GreenTM, which are currently being deployed in Canada, Ireland, and several U.S. states. Nation’s Mayors Assemble New Police Reform and Racial Justice Working Group

Today, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) launched a new initiative to produce, advance and enact meaningful reforms to address police violence and patterns of racial discrimination. The Police Reform and Racial Justice Working Group will take on the urgent task of outlining a series of specific recommendations related to America’s policing practices to help end the injustices facing black Americans. The Working Group is composed of the mayors of Chicago, Tampa, and Cincinnati, and the police chiefs of Baltimore, Phoenix and Columbia and will be assisted by other experts in the field with the goal of releasing actionable recommendations in the coming weeks.
