New EIA Report, Mukula Cartel

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A new report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), Mukula Cartel, exposes how associates connected to Zambian President Edgar Lungu, including his daughter Tasila Lungu, onetime resident of the United States of America, are reportedly involved in the plunder of valuable, increasingly scarce, mukula rosewood trees; and hence the destruction of Zambia’s vulnerable forests. The investigation shows that despite public pledges to end the illegal mukula trade, several politicians are repeatedly named as key actors in an influential timber trafficking network that bypasses existing national bans on mukula harvest and export.

China to shut down all ivory factories, retail stores in 2017

China Global Television Network (CGTN) – China has shut down 67, or one third its ivory factories and retail stores, and will shut down the remaining 105 by the end of the year, according to the State Forestry Administration on Friday.

Google Maps virtual feature to help conserve elephants in Kenyan park

Google has launched Kenya’s first virtual tour of a game reserve at the the Samburu National Park through its Street View feature to boost wildlife conservation efforts. Elephants are a key tourist attraction in Kenya but are also a prime target for poachers who kill them for their tusks. Experts say that more than 30,000 elephants are killed every year in Africa.
