(R Reports) – The family of Walter Scott, an unarmed 50-year-old black man who was shot in the back by a white police officer in South Carolina, will get a $6.5 million settlement from the city of North Charleston, officials say.
The shooting was caught on a bystander’s video and reignited a national outcry over police treatment of minorities.
The town’s mayor said in a statement that he was glad the family and the city were able to reach an out of court settlement without the necessity of a lawsuit.
The lawyer for the Scott family said the payout was the largest pre-lawsuit settlement in the history of South Carolina and one of the largest in the U.S.
The police officer, Michael Slager, faces a murder charge in Scott’s death.
