JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (AUGUST 25, 2015) (REUTERS) – A grandson of Nelson Mandela accused of raping a 15-year old girl was granted a 7,000 rand ($537.57) bail on Tuesday (August 25) after spending about a week in jail.
The grandson, who cannot be named or pictured, because he is yet to plead to the charge, is accused of raping a 15-year old girl at a pub in an affluent northern Johannesburg suburb of Greenside.
Although the accused cannot be filmed, members of the Mandela family were seen leaving the court, including Ndaba, another of Mandela’s grandsons.
The judge gave defence lawyers and prosecutors time to prepare for the trial, when the grandson will be asked to plead.
“We accept today’s decision as the NPA, obviously the onus was on the accused to adduce evidence to convince the court that he’s a suitable candidate for bail, so they succeeded in doing that. And from here it is for us to go and prepare for the trial,” Phindi Louw, spokeswoman for the National Prosecuting Authority said.
Under South African law, it is considered statutory rape to have sex with anyone younger than 16 years of age.
“It has been confirmed today that it is a schedule six offence, we all know now that the victim is under the age of 16,” Louw added.
According to the complainant, the incident took place on 7 August 2015. It was reported to the police on August 14, 2015.
