Smoke billowing Bali volcano send tremors amid imminent eruption

KARANGASEM, BALI, INDONESIA (SEPTEMBER 27, 2017) (REUTERS) – Moung Agung, a volcano on the highest alert level, spurs smoke and ash as tremors continue to rock the Indonesian island.

The frequency of tremors have decreased, but the intensity has definitely increased, said Gede Suantika, Head of Mitigation and Operation of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Indonesian authorities have imposed a 12-km (7.5 miles) exclusion zone around the crater evacuating more than 75,000 people.

Mount Agung’s latest rumbles are a spine-chilling reminder for some locals – it erupted around 50 years ago killing more than one thousand people.
