Massive traffic jam outside Beijing after national holiday

Photos from Chinese media show a huge traffic jam on the outskirts of Beijing caused by a massive flow of travellers returning after a week-long national holiday.

BEIJING, CHINA (OCTOBER 6, 2015) (CHINA DAILY) – Photos taken by state-run newspaper China Daily on Tuesday (October 6) showed thousands of vehicles, bumper to bumper, in a huge traffic jam at a highway toll booth on the outskirts of Beijing.

A massive flow of travellers were returning to Beijing from a week-long national holiday.

The official Xinhua news agency said that some traffic jams went as long as 4 km.

While China is spending billions of dollars on infrastructure such as roads and railways, it is still struggling to keep up with the demands of its booming economy and traffic jams are common.
