Clashes erupt outside Catalan leader’s polling station in Girona

GIRONA, SPAIN (OCTOBER 1, 2017) (REUTERS) – Spanish Civil Guard police in riot clashed with people gathered outside Catalan President Carles Puigdemon’s polling station in Girona on Sunday (October 1), minutes before he was due to vote in a referendum on Catalan independence from Spain.

Police officers were seen pushing people around as they created a cordon outside the station to prevent crowds from entering the polling before they stormed the building.

Puigdemont had announced he would vote at the polling station near Girona at 0930 AM (0730 GMT), around the same time as the police entered, but there was no sign of him in the television footage.

The referendum, declared illegal by Spain’s central government, has thrown the country into its worst constitutional crisis in decades and raised fears of street violence as a test of will between Madrid and Barcelona plays out.
