Supporters of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan celebrate victory in the referendum vote as the latest counts point to a tight win.
ANKARA, TURKEY (APRIL 16, 2017) (REUTERS) – Supporters of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan celebrated victory in the referendum vote on Sunday (April 16) as the latest counts pointed to a tight win.
Waving red Turkish flags, hundreds of cheering supporters gathered outside Erdogan’s AK Party headquarters.
During the final stages of counting, ‘Yes” votes were leading at 51.3 percent after 98.2 percent of ballots had been counted.
A “Yes” vote would replace Turkey’s parliamentary democracy with an all-powerful presidency and could see Erdogan in office until at least 2029, in the most radical change to the country’s political system in its modern history.
