Obama: “Have a safe and happy Fourth of July”

(NVO) – U.S. President Barack Obama wished Americans a “happy and safe Fourth of July” on Saturday (July 4) during his weekly address.

“Like many of you, Michelle, Sasha, Malia, and I are going to spend the day outdoors, grilling burgers and dogs, and watching the fireworks with our family and friends,” he said, adding that they would be joined by hundreds of military personnel and their families.

In addition to honoring U.S. troops, Obama said July Fourth was a day to reflect on America’s Founding Fathers.

“We remember as well that this is the day when, 239 years ago, our founding patriots declared our independence, proclaiming that all of us are created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights including the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” he said.

Before signing off, Obama cheered, “Good luck to the U.S. Women’s National Team in the World Cup Final!”

They will face off in a match against Japan on Sunday in Vancouver, Canada.
