Tears flow at Sanders event in Iowa

Tears flowed at a campaign event held by Democratic presidential candidate Senator Sanders in Iowa as a woman described living with a low income.

(CBS) – Tears flowed as Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders held a rally in Iowa Falls, Iowa on Monday.

Sanders asked people to share what it is like to live on 10,000 or 12,000 dollars a year. A woman whose voice broke as she spoke said, “I’ve been living on less than that for a long time, because of disabilities” she said. As her voice broke she said, “It’s so hard to do anything to pay your bills, you are ashamed all the time.” She said, “When you can’t buy presents for your children, it is really really hard.”

Sanders responded saying, “It is not easy for people to stand up and say that.” He said, “You’ve got Republicans going around and saying ‘We have got to cut social security, We got to cut it.” He then said, “Does anybody here know what the COLA was, the Cost of Living Adjustment, this year for people on social security? …it was zero.”

Sanders, a Democratic socialist and Vermont senator who is threatening Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, has railed against “millionaires and billionaires” and the political power they wield throughout his insurgent campaign for the Democratic nomination.
