WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES (MAY 11, 2017) (NBC NEWS) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey is bringing Republicans and Democrats together and will not thwart an investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s election campaign and Russia, a political analyst told Reuters on Friday (May 12).
“Once the FBI gets on to something, they have a lot of integrity; they will pursue it and pursue it and pursue it. I am not sure the president understands that,” said James Thurber, professor of government at American University in Washington.
He added that Trump’s tweets targeting Comey and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper were uniting lawmakers against the president.
“These tweets back and forth are going after people that are well-liked, well-respected, and in my opinion, it is drawing people from the Democratic and Republican Party together, which is a very hard thing to do in a highly polarized institution,” Thurber said.
Trump has repeatedly shunned norms and ethics in his handling of Comey’s firing, the professor continued. However, he expressed confidence in U.S. institutions’ ability to check the power of the executive branch, including the Justice Department.
” I think, generally, the bureaucracy –or if it’s in national security, the military — will stand up and they will resist things that go against the Constitution of the United States and the rule of law.”
