Violent clashes in Nairobi follow election result

KIBERA, NAIROBI, KENYA (AUGUST 17, 2017) (REUTERS) – Violence erupted in Nairobi’s Kibera slum in the Kenyan capital on Saturday morning (August 17).

There have been sporadic clashes between supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga and police following the confirmation of Uhuru Kenyatta as president on Friday (August 16).

A young Kenyan girl was shot dead by police during operations to quell protests against the Kenyatta’s re-election in the Mathare area.

A government official told reporters another man was killed in Kisumu county, centre of serious post-election ethnic violence in 2007 in which 1,200 people were killed and 600,000 displaced.

In Kibera, armed police units backed by water cannon moving through the rubble-strewn streets of the slum.
