“I leave my soul” – evacuated mother of Aleppo girl Bana Alabed

The mother of Twitter sensation seven-year-old Syrian girl Bana Alabed says she has left her soul behind after they were evacuated from their home in eastern Aleppo.

SAID TO BE AL-RASHIDEEN, SYRIA (SAID TO BE DECEMBER 19, 2016) (SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE) – The mother of Twitter sensation Bana Alabed said on Monday (December 19) she has left her soul behind in Aleppo.

She made the statement after they were evacuated from the besieged city to rebel-held al-Rashideen town which is near the government-held western Aleppo.

Bana and her mother Fatemah were evacuated from Aleppo late on Sunday (December 18), officials from Turkish charity IHH said.

Bana’s depiction of daily life in Aleppo gained a large Twitter following, with some 137,000 people following her, as she shared videos and pictures of life during the conflict from her @AlabedBana account.

Fatemah, who manages the social media account, told Qasioun News Agency that she was feeling sad to have left her town.

“I am sad because I leave my country, I leave my soul there. I want to take our freedom there but not be like refugees in other countries,” Fatemah told the independent licensed Syrian news agency, located in the Turkish city of Gaziantep.

With Bana standing alongside her, Fatemah said they were taken out of Aleppo in bus, with the journey taking 24 hours and without “water or food”.

“We stayed like a prisoner, a hostage,” she said.

Dozens of children from an orphanage in Aleppo were also evacuated along with Bana Alabed.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from Aleppo since Thursday under a ceasefire deal that ends fighting in the city.
