What is universally known as “football” in the UK and much of Europe is called “soccer” in the United States to distinguish it from the American gridiron game. Interestingly, the term “soccer” originated in late 19th-century England as a slang abbreviation for “association football,” which was used to differentiate it from “rugby football”.
