The rise of far-right politician Giorgia Meloni has left many outside Italy asking how her brand of what many argue is fascism can achieve such prominence in a country that has experienced life under the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini. The answer can be traced back to a recent normalisation of reactionary politics.

The Italian actor Pino Calabrese will receive the Cultured Focus Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate an illuminating career of 50 years in theater, film and television. Mr. Calabrese began his artistic career in 1972, first working in theater with actors and directors such as Massimo Troisi, Gigi Proietti, Enrico Montesano, Pippo Delbono and many others, passing from cabaret to dramatic theater, from musicals to comedies, to theater productions with a social and political perspective. I sat down to watch the first episode of this year’s Love Island with my daughter as I was told that there was a deaf contestant appearing on the show. I don’t usually watch Love Island, but as a deaf person I was intrigued to find out more about how this contestant, Tasha Ghouri, would handle being the only deaf person on the show.
