UpEnergy issues world’s first carbon credits linked to electric clean cooking devices deployed in sub-Saharan Africa

UpEnergy, a leading social enterprise based in Kampala, Uganda, announced it has issued the world’s first ever carbon credits linked to emissions savings from the use of electric clean cooking devices. The emissions reductions were created in a new UpEnergy-led project aimed at replacing traditional, biomass burning stoves with an innovative electric stove created by climate tech startup PowerUP. The PowerUP electric pressure cooker (EPC) is designed for low-income households in several countries across sub-Saharan Africa. The credits, which are verified by The Gold Standard, represent the opportunity for African consumers with access to electricity to abandon the toxic burning of unsustainable, wood-based fuels and breathe cleaner air with healthier, zero-emissions electric cooking. Green Hydrogen: IDTechEx Asks if It Can Be Cost Competitive

The clean hydrogen market is poised for growth, driven by decarbonization efforts and concerns around energy security. A number of ambitious targets and roadmaps are being set out by different governments and regions. Clean hydrogen can refer to a number of routes for producing hydrogen, but the primary among them are green and blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced from natural gas or coal but with carbon emissions captured. Green hydrogen refers to the splitting of water via electrolyzers powered by renewable power sources. IDTechEx forecasts that the water electrolyzer market will grow to over US$120B by 2033. AI could make more work for us, instead of simplifying our lives

There’s a common perception that artificial intelligence (AI) will help streamline our work. There are even fears that it could wipe out the need for some jobs altogether.

But in a study of science laboratories I carried out with three colleagues at the University of Manchester, the introduction of automated processes that aim to simplify work — and free people’s time — can also make that work more complex, generating new tasks that many workers might perceive as mundane.
