THALES TO MODERNISE ZAMBIA’S AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL WITH LATEST TOPSKY ATC SOLUTION

Thales, Tue, Oct 10 2023 – Following the contract signed in 2014 with Zambia Airports Corporation Limited(ZACL), Thales is modernising the ATC (air traffic control) centres at Lusaka and Livingstone international airports in Zambia.
Thales is expanding its TopSky – ATC air traffic control automation solution with two new applications. The first is Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), which allows clear and secure dialogue between pilots and controllers. The second is Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C), which automatically transmits aircraft flight status reports to ATM systems on the ground. Continue reading

Experienced Pilots Voice Safety Concerns As Holiday Travel Season Begins

As Airline Captains, First Officers, Line Check Pilots, Mentors and Passengers, we have witnessed a concerning and significant rise in close call aviation incidents in 2023. The safety of commercial airline travel has been compromised because of the increasing number of experienced airline pilots being forced into retirement at age 65 and carriers’ ongoing struggles to attract and retain top tier pilot candidates. Factoring in the loss of on-the-job training (“operational experience” or OE) by the more experienced pilots who mentor the less experienced pilots and given the unprecedented level of US air travel following the pandemic, the situation is untenable. Exporting surveillance to Africa

Privacy experts are calling for citizens to be protected from growing surveillance in Africa, following a new report by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the African Digital Rights Network (ADRN).

Their report, “Mapping the supply of surveillance technologies to Africa” focuses on Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, Malawi and Zambia importing surveillance tech from countries including the U.S., Britain, China, Israel as well as the EU amounting to more than $1bn every year. Continue reading

Large-scale proteomics in population-based studies from UK and Iceland

n an article revealed today in Nature, scientists from deCODE Genetics, a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical company Amgen, demonstrated how plasma proteomics can contribute to a better understanding of diseases. The study’s focus on the plasma proteome led the team to find associations between various diseases and the levels of specific proteins. “Measuring a great number of proteins in a population-based cohort enables the discovery of circulating biomarkers and the early detection of disease,” says Patrick Sulem, scientist at deCODE genetics and one of the senior authors on the paper.
