Why Carrots and Sticks Destroy Motivation

Cultivating Autonomous Minds: Why External Incentives Undermine Deep Learning

Mon, July 26 2026 /Mpelembe Media/ — Ancient wisdom and modern psychological science converge on a fundamental truth: relying on external incentives like rewards and punishments represents a flawed foundation for genuine learning and human development. The ancient Chinese Daoist philosopher Zhuangzi famously observed that “rewards and punishment is the lowest form of education,” criticizing external carrots and sticks for treating individuals like animals driven by force rather than self-directed minds. Zhuangzi argued that external controls transform learning into a mere transactional exchange, replacing authentic curiosity and spontaneous inner transformation (ziran) with superficial compliance and fear. Demonstrating his commitment to personal freedom over external status, Zhuangzi famously rejected a prime ministership, choosing the unconstrained “mud” of an ordinary life over the gilded captivity of royal favor. Centering education around external rewards assumes that learners possess no internal direction, thereby extinguishing their natural drive toward mastery and moral self-cultivation. How AI Is Dismantling Factory Classrooms

Reclaiming the Purpose of Schooling: Why AI Can Automate Information Processing but Never Replace Human Mentorship

Wed Oct. 21, 2026 /Mpelembe Media/ — The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence in compulsory and higher education has transformed instructional delivery through adaptive learning systems, automated assessment tools, and virtual tutoring platforms. These algorithmic engines excel at administrative automation, personalized pacing, and instant feedback on rule-based tasks. However, defining schooling merely as downloading information or completing standardized tasks risks outsourcing genuine cognitive development to automated tools. Grounding educational practice in foundational philosophy demonstrates that true schooling extends far beyond static data retrieval; it is fundamentally an endeavor of human formation, moral character, civic responsibility, and emotional maturity. Why critical thinking is an important skill in the age of AI.

April 29, 2023 /Business/ — It will require critical thinking and systems thinking to get the most out of AI tools. Being a Prompt Engineer will become a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prompt engineers simply need a decent level of language and grammar skills, data analysis, and critical thinking.

Prompted Critical thinking is the key. AI generators are not designed to assess the veracity of text they input and output. Nor are they intended to use any sort of critical thinking, which is why jobs that require critical thinking are not about to be replaced by Generative AI.

You don’t need to memorize – it’s time to focus on real-life skills, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. The critical thinking required to enter a prompt and use AI tools effectively is worth training for – not the memorization of information. Continue reading →

Why universities should return to oral exams in the AI and ChatGPT era

Stephen Dobson, CQUniversity Australia

Imagine the following scenario.

You are a student and enter a room or Zoom meeting. A panel of examiners who have read your essay or viewed your performance, are waiting inside.

You answer a series of questions as they probe your knowledge and skills. You leave. The examiners then consider the preliminary pre-oral exam grade and if an adjustment up or down is required.

You are called back to receive your final grade.

This type of oral assessment – or viva voce as it was known in Latin – is a tried and tested form of educational assessment.
